This is a wall art made with a vintage silk kimono from the 1930s.
A big turnip? Why not?
This fabric is Meisen kimono silk, which became most popular around the 1910s to the 1950s and this was the kimono of the modern, independent Japanese woman. It is known for its bold and vivid design, some almost like pop art. It is said that its dynamic designs were inspired by European art movements such as Art Deco and Art Nouveau, Abstract Expressionism and Constructivism. It is an ikat weaving, thus creating blurred edges to the patterns. This fabric is almost 100 years old, but the use of colour and the using vegetable as a theme of the design is very unique and stands out from the typical kimono design. If you take a close look, silver threads are used to accentuate the detailed design in the stem of the turnip. This will be a "one of a kind" piece of art on your wall.
The fabrics we use are in excellent condition, though sometimes there are small marks, blemishes, and or creases indicative of the fabric's rich history. If you have any questions or concerns, please send us a message.
